1. Pre-meeting, Sunday, August 12 – museum tour, seminar and if enough interest, collecting trip in
Carbonear. Carbonear is ~1.5 hrs from St. John’s. Here is a description from Barry Hicks, tour host:
“We will join Barry Hicks in Carbonear on August 12, where he will tell us about the life of Philip Henry Gosse (PHG). PHG was a famous 19th century British naturalist who started his love of nature in Carbonear where he lived he for a short time; he was the first to document Newfoundland insects in his "Entomologia Terra Novae". We'll spend some time at the local museum, have lunch at the Stone Jug restaurant, and collect insects if there is interest.” This excursion could be extended to include supper and music if sufficient numbers want to do it.
2. Post-meeting, Tuesday, August 14 afternoon – boat tour on the “Witless Bay Ecological Reserve” and/or hiking the East Coast Trail, depending on interest. Boat tours usually cost ~ $60 per person; hiking is free.
